It’s not what you think. We’re not talking about making money here. This is not that kind of blog. #40Kin40Hrs is about creating something that matters–even if you (or others) don’t think it’s possible.
Let me digress for a minute here…
For the last six years, I have started each new year with a 3-Word Theme (if you’re curious about my past themes or how they work, you can read more about it here).
In 2016, I focused on these three words to help guide my year:
I didn’t try and force myself to manifest my goals in any particular way. Instead, I simply kept myself open and connected…allowing the words to come to life through me the way they wanted to so I could remain focused and inspired all year long. The words formed into intentions that helped me get back on track whenever I felt stuck or unmotivated:
- Trust my instinct.
- Love my self.
- Teach others the same.
Not only did I close out 2016 having my best year yet in terms of my emotional, financial, mental, and spiritual health—I also celebrated my 40th birthday in December. I didn’t throw a party of any sort. Instead, I took myself on a solo writing trip to Niagara Falls, Ontario to do a whole lot of self-care and book writing in (somewhat of) seclusion.
Anyone who knows me also knows that I can never do a project without giving myself a little bit of a challenge…
So, in typical Berni fashion, I challenged myself to write 40 thousand words in 40 hours while traveling to and from my destination by train, bus, rental car, plane, taxi, and foot over the course of 8 days.
The only stipulations were:
- I had to create original content during my travels.
- I could write on my laptop, iPhone notes app, paper notebook, paper, etc.
- I could record my thoughts using my voice memo app and transcribe the audio files into text.
- The word count would start on Day 1 and end at the close of Day 8.
It may come to no surprise to you that I had the most amazing trip of my life. I had intended to chronicle the journey here at this blog, but to be honest with you, being present for myself on my vacation was what made it the experience of a lifetime.
Here are some highlights from Day 1 and 2 of my #40Kin40Hrs trip:
Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed waiting at the Metropolitan Lounge inside Chicago Union Station before my overnight train ride to Buffalo, New York.
It was just too beautiful to stay inside the train station, so I ventured out along the Chicago Riverwalk to get some grub and take some photos. Okay, so the temperatures were windy and bitter cold…but at least the sun was peaking out, all right?
Arrived in Buffalo the next morning and had a long layover before the next train out to Ontario. So I stopped at the Walden Galleria Mall and got a steal of a deal on a pair of black faux leather boots (sorry, not pictured here). While waiting for the bus to take me back to the train station, look what I saw etched on the sign post!
Arrived in Niagara Falls, Ontario later that afternoon, and hopped in a cab to check-in to my bed & breakfast. Wow, I was the only guest during my entire stay! I’ll take the best room in the house!
My first full day in Niagara Falls, I spent walking all around the area from Clinton Hill (entertainment/theme park area) to the Niagara Parkway (where you can shoot breath-taking views of the Falls). Oh look, a rainbow!
Not a shabby view of the Falls, ey?
I went on a “Journey Behind the Falls” tour to take snap shots of these gorgeous angles!
Wait…is that a double rainbow?!
I put on a few miles on my pedometer and decided to treat myself to a late lunch at dusk at Elements on the Falls. What a view!
And the food wasn’t too shabby either.
At night, they shine colorful lights on the Falls.
I’m headed towards that tall guy over there!
Wait, it’s so tall…how the heck did I miss the front entrance and get lost? Thanks to the staff at Margaritaville for helping me find my way to the Skylon Tower (through their parking lot) to make it for my dinner reservation!
So the restaurant is 775 feet up from the ground and the entire thing rotates 360 degrees on the hour so you can get a panoramic view of Niagara Falls. Don’t put your belongings on the ledge they warned!
Dinner was yummy. Now for better picture-taking from the observation deck.
Stay tuned at this blog for more #40Kin40Hrs updates. In the mean time, lessons learned on my trip?
Trust your INSTINCT. LOVE yourself. TEACH others to do the same.
