What to Do About Worry
I’ve taken some time to reflect on my Three Words and Theme Song for 2012 the past few weeks and it’s been utterly amazing what has surfaced. If you didn’t catch that previous post, I write about how I have selected three words and a theme song for 2012 in lieu of new years resolutions:
Word One: FORWARD
Word Two: COMPASSION
Word Three: WORRY
Theme Song: “Mama Said Knock You Out” by LL Cool J
So you’re wondering, “What does this mean, Berni?”
It’s whatever I make of it, is what it means. So, here’s what I make of it.
FORWARD
As in “moving forward,” this word reminds me to let go of the past and not be regretful or resentful about events or people that hurt me in some way.
This one is difficult for so many reasons because it’s easy for us to get caught up in the drama.
Have you heard yourself, after a break up, saying, “Being mad at him for hurting me will help me to be strong enough to get over him,”?
Being mad takes away your positive energy. Taking away your positive energy to focus on resenting him gives him power. This means you’re not letting go.
The best way to let go is to truly move forward with YOU as the focal point.
Move forward for your SELF!
COMPASSION
It’s one thing to do what you love in your life and work. It’s another, however, to do what you love in a compassionate manner.
For instance, I sat down with a buddy of mine who talked about how he once used to spread hate and violence in his life and work as a white power skinhead. When he reformed, he used that same intensity to promote peace and basic human goodness. As we dove deeper into our conversation, he realized that this intensity was a cause for concern regardless of the desired outcome.
Whether it is promoting hate or love, being extreme in manner largely feeds the ego more than it helps the people you are trying to serve.
Though extreme behavior has the ability to attract, it also has the ability to repel because no one can truly be persuaded to believe in something out of peer pressure or via scare tactics; that is, not in the long term.
We need to be convinced, for ourselves, that we believe in something because we either thought or felt it made sense to us. That it aligns with our core values.
The best way to do what we love and help serve others is to show compassion through and through.
Compassion not only feeds others, it feeds YOU!
WORRY
This one was an interesting word and many of you agreed with me.
I sat on this one for awhile thinking to myself, “What the heck am I supposed to do with ‘worry’?”
Then as I reflected further, I could only hear the words of my spiritual advisor responding, “Transform it.”
If you’ve been following my posts for some time now, you know I come from a worry-some and anxious family that suffers from depression.
As I’ve stated in many previous posts and will again in future ones, I fight the beast every single day to not let worry, anxiety and depression consume me as I opt to live a less-than-conventional life as a solopreneur.
However, day in and day out, I choose this lifestyle.
I choose this work.
I choose to subject myself to the emotional rollercoaster highs and lows of being a risk-taking, hard-working, and challenge-the-status-quo kind of person who doesn’t want to clock in at 9 and out at 5 at a corporate cubicle job.
And as much as we all long for some sense of financial stability and security to help us feel grounded and safe, some of us get a thrill from choosing a less conventional route.
Even though I can get stressed from time to time and sometimes down on my luck, I strongly enjoy the feeling of being challenged and under pressure to perform so that I can have complete control over the definition of my worth.
And that’s just it! My successes or failures rely solely on my shoulders.
Therefore, if I’m failing, it’s my fault. If I’m succeeding, it’s to my credit.
And if I’m built to worry or be anxious, it’s my job to not ignore the elephant in the room.
I can keep calling myself a worry wart, see it as a detriment, and let it paralyze me.
Or, I can acknowledge this tendency to worry and use it to fuel me.
We must embrace who we are, and how we are, in order to make sense of who we want to be, and how we want to be, more of.
The beauty is that we have the power to transform our greatest weaknesses into our greatest strengths.
Worry doesn’t have to consume you, it can fuel YOU!
MAMA SAID KNOCK YOU OUT
I chose this song by LL Cool J because I am learning to box in 2012. So, it only made sense from a literal and figurative standpoint.
The idea was to select a song that will motivate you when you’re not feeling your best or that will fuel you when you are.
I haven’t had to pull this song out yet because there is an abundance of foot stomping, booty popping, and heart thumping music on my Spotify list.
Music is truly a universal language and one that I’m so grateful to be able to hear in my head, feel in my veins, and understand in my heart.
YOUR THREE WORDS AND THEME SONG
